Wildlife at Kaeng Krachan

Flora and fauna

The forests contain a great biodiversity of pristine tropical vegetation, including tropical and subtropical broadleaf tree species and palms.

There are 57 known species of mammals, 461 species of birds and around 300 butterfly species in Kaeng Krachan.

While the chances are very good to see several mammals over few days such as malayan porcupine, white-handed gibbon, dusky leaf monkey, Indian large civet, masked pal civet, golden jackal, yellow-throated marten, barking deer and elephants it will take some effort to see others like mainland serow, sambar deer, bear, wild dogs, boars, leopard, clowded leaopard and gaur. The elephant sighting has become relatively easy since couple of elephants visits Ban Krang several nights every week, normally it too needs some effort to see.

While Kaeng Krachan is the only place in Thailand where ratchet-tailed treepie can be seen white-fronted scops owl is another rare bird, both favourites among the birdwatchers. With some effort, there is good chance to see 30-50 different bird species in a day.

Have you been to Kaeng Krachan National Park and seen species not listed here? Please let us know in case, it will be much appreciated!
