Private Tour | 1-day wildlife tour with night safari in Khao Yai
Why?
Besides what a 1 day tour offers, combining one day tour with a night safari well after the dark will give you a chance to see both diurnal and nocturnal wildlife of Khao Yai National Park.
What?
A 1-day tour will start in the morning and end well after the dark. Activities include hiking in the jungle, safari driving among the roads in search of elephants and other exciting animals, safari drives in the morning and later afternoon, visiting a viewpoint and one of Khao Yai's impressive waterfalls and finally ending the day with a night safari.
Itinerary
The itinerary below is just an example and can easily be turned upside down due to the length of different activities. We adapt to mother nature and customers' interests.
We will meet you at your hotel or other pick-up location we agreed on.
The tour always starts around 8 to 8:30 am with a slow drive through jungle and grasslands in search of wildlife. Once we arrive at the first hiking point we continue the trip in the rain forest between huge trees in search of any type of animal.
After lunch the first stop will be Haew Suwat Waterfall, known from Leonardio Di Caprio's "The Beach" movie, possibly continuing the tour to one of the best viewpoints of the national park. Last couple of hours before dinner will be an ideal time for searching for elephants.
After the dinner break our tour will end with a night safari in search of nocturnal wildlife, thereafter you will be returned to your hotel or other location we agreed on around 8 to 9 pm.

Where & when?
Khao Yai National Park is around 2.5 hours from Bangkok, easily accessible with public transportation with minivans being the fastest way. Our private guides will meet you in your hotel in Pak Chong -which is the nearest city- or anywhere between Pak Chong and Khao Yai National Park.
We can arrange a taxi from Bangkok on request. It takes 2.5 hours, it costs 2,200 Baht one way or 3,200 Baht for a round trip within the same day.
The park is open and accessible all year round but for night safaris we strongly recommend to avoid week-ends and public holidays when there are too many vehicles on the roads, reducing the chance to see animals significantly. The weather can be pretty cool during the cold season around November to February, so a sweater is a must!
Important note
Please confirm with us before booking a hotel in Khao Yai area as we don't offer pickup if your hotel is too far away. Or because some hotel owners don't like their guests to be picked up by tour operators.

We really enjoyed our tour, particularly the guided hikes on the trails where we found our guide really experienced and nice. We liked the night safari less because we felt that animals where being harassed by the numerous cars and light. We would not recommend or do the night safari again as we did not find it ethical and sustainable for wildlife.
As a side note, I also read the species fact sheets that are provided on the Thai national parks website and found them extremely well documented and detailed. It is a great resource!
Thank you for this experience

Thanks Solène for your feedback. We're glad to hear you’ve enjoyed the tour.
We understand your concerns regarding the night safari.
As mentioned in the blog post that we've shared in our first reply to you before you booked the tour, we don't have influence on how this activity is carried out. It is run by the national park staff, not our own staff. We definitely believe there is room for improvement. But unfortunately this is out of our hands.
Visiting nature affects wildlife. Be it in daytime or nighttime. But wildlife densities are higher in the areas that are regularly visited by tourists than in the inaccessible parts. Poaching is an issue in areas where tourists don't go. The positive effect of wildlife tourism outweighs the negative effects.
Night safaris have been operated by the park authorities for decades, long before we started our tour business. The night safaris are popular and run every day. I'm not saying that it doesn't have any effect on the wildlife. But if it would have a serious negative effect on the animals, then you have to wonder why the wildlife is still showing up every evening. They could easily forage a bit further away from the road. Due to park regulation, the night drives are restricted to the first few hours of the evening. The majority of the night there is no spotlighting taking place. Also, all drives follow the same route, so only wildlife in this area is 'affected'. We believe the impact on the wildlife is limited.

Hi,
I greatly appreciate that you took the time to write this response and discuss the pros and cons of this activity. I definitely agree with your points regarding behavioral changes / density changes. You also make an intresting and important point about the poaching risk decrease in tourism areas. This does bring a new perspective that I had not considered.
Altogether we had a wonderful time and I was really impressed by the professionalism of the tour and conservation efforts in the park. Thank you again for the work you do!

Very pleasant experience with a great guide that was one with nature. We got a lot of information, guidance & explanation on everything in and around the park. A full day of very nice experiences, with the apotheose of seeing all the animals, including the wild elephants.

Didn't see elephants, dhole or Gaur, but it was still one of the best days I've had. Guide was great and I can't recommend having one enough.
Go for it.

Was a great tout. Pity we didn't see any elephant's . The night Safari was great seeing the night animals. Was fortunate enough to see a jackle.
The only thing I would suggest is starting the tour a bit later. Maybe 9am so you don't need to sit around for the night Safari.

We had an amazing safari with Rosa and our driver! We saw so many wild animals and the guides had such a great eye for spotting them as well as excellent knowledge on the animals. Probably our favourite day in Thailand. We saw:
Hornbills
Deer
Porcupines
Snakes
Civit cat
Jackal
An elephant (which was amazing to see in the wild)
So many different species of birds.
A great experience and we were so glad of our amazing guides

We have enjoyed our tour and night safari very much. We appreciate our guide Jum in her skills in spotting wildlife even when driving. She would say there are 2 black giant squirrels there and we will be "where?", then she will show us using her wildlife spotting scope. We will be happy to join the tour again, hopefully we are lucky enough to meet the elephants!
