Khao Sok National Park

Private Tour | 2 Days / 1 Night Private Cheow Lan Lake Tour (Khao Sok)

Located between Khao Sok National Park and Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Cheow Lan Lake offers some of the most scenic views in Thailand.

The lake is best enjoyed with more than one night’s stay, but if you only have one night, you can still experience several activities on this tour. If you’d like to explore more of the lake, a 3D/2N tour would be a better option.

Activities on Cheow Lan Lake

During this 2‑day/1‑night private tour on Cheow Lan Lake, activities include sightseeing among limestone formations, a longer hike to a viewpoint and/or shorter hike to a waterfall, a cave visit, canoeing, and boat trips near your floating resort for wildlife observation.

The tour includes two nights at a floating resort of your choice, a private licensed guide, and a private long‑tail boat with an experienced driver.

Why book a private tour?

Group tours on Cheow Lan Lake usually operate with larger shared boats carrying up to 18 guests and follow a fixed schedule. On a private tour, the boat, guide and room(s) are reserved exclusively for your group.

Our private tours are flexible. Daily activities can be adjusted together with your guide based on your interests, weather conditions, and the location of your chosen resort. The first day morning session of this tour is fixed with visiting of the 3 rocks and a cave before reaching your resort.

Itinerary

There is no fixed itinerary for our lake tours. The schedule below is only an example. Depending on the location of your raft house, weather conditions, and your preferences, the activities may vary. For example, you may choose to spend more time canoeing, skip certain activities, or simply relax and enjoy time at the raft house with friends or family.

Because the lake is surrounded by steep cliffs and mountain slopes, there are no long hiking options. Most hikes in the area are relatively short.

The time spent visiting attractions and doing boat safaris also needs to be balanced. Although the boat is available to you during the tour, it cannot be used continuously for wildlife safaris. Wildlife activity is usually limited during the middle of the day and tends to be more active in the early morning and late afternoon. For this reason, safari trips are usually done early in the morning and again later in the afternoon before sunset.

Note: From Sai Chon, Laguna Cheow Lan, Panvaree resorts, and the 360° Issara area, either the viewpoint trail or waterfall can be visited, not both. The Swamp Forest Trail is accessible from these locations.

Where & When

The tour starts at Cheow Lan Lake Pier (Rajjaprabha Dam), approximately 65 km from Khao Sok National Park headquarters. Transfers can be arranged from Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, Ao Nang, Surat Thani, and Khao Sok village.

Nearest airports:

It is recommended to arrive in the area at least one day before the tour. Starting the tour on the same day as arrival from islands or airports is not advised.

This tour operates year‑round.

When to book

Peak season at Cheow Lan Lake runs from November to mid‑April and mid‑July to late August. During these periods, bookings should be made as early as possible, primarily due to limited guide availability.

FAQs

Will we see elephants?

Cheow Lan Lake is a wild, protected area, not a zoo, so elephant sightings can never be guaranteed.

On average, the chance of seeing wild elephants is around 15–20% during a 2-day/1-night tour and 30–40% during a 3-day/2-night tour. While elephants are among the most sought-after animals, you are much more likely to see other wildlife, such as monkeys, hornbills, and a variety of other birds and reptiles.

What happens if it rains?

That depends on how much it rains and your preferences. If you would rather avoid the rain, you can relax at the floating resort until it passes. If you don't mind wearing a raincoat and getting a little wet, most activities on the lake can continue as planned. In the event of very heavy rain or thunderstorms, we will pause the tour and wait until conditions are safe to continue.

Rain is possible at any time of the year, not just during the rainy season. Although occasional all-day rain does occur, it is relatively uncommon. Even during the rainy season, it is not unusual to have several consecutive days—or occasionally even weeks—without any rain. When it does rain, showers are often brief, typically lasting 20–40 minutes, and many days experience only a single shower.

Is one night on Cheow Lan Lake enough?

For many visitors, yes. A 2-day/1-night tour provides enough time to experience the highlights of Cheow Lan Lake, including a boat safari, wildlife spotting, kayaking, swimming, and spending a night at a floating resort.

However, because boats normally depart the pier around 10:00 am, resorts have fixed check-in and check-out times, and most floating resorts are 40–60 minutes by boat from the pier, the actual time spent at the resort is shorter than many visitors expect. By the following morning, boats need to return to the pier in time for their next guests.

If your schedule allows, a 3-day/2-night tour offers a more relaxed experience, with extra time to enjoy the scenery, explore the lake, and increase your chances of seeing wildlife. That said, many visitors are perfectly satisfied with a 2-day/1-night tour.

Which floating resort will I stay at?

We currently work with six floating resorts on Cheow Lan Lake: 500 Rai Floating Resort, Panvaree The Greenery, Panvaree Resort, Laguna Cheow Lan, Phupha Waree Raft House, and Sai Chon Raft House.

The resort you stay at depends on your budget, preferred room type, and availability on your travel dates. We will recommend the most suitable option based on your preferences and current availability.

Is this tour private?

Yes. This is a strictly private tour. You will not share the guide, longtail boat, or floating resort room with anyone outside your booking. Any transfers you book with us are also private.

Can we choose the resort?

Yes. You are welcome to choose your preferred floating resort, subject to room availability on your travel dates.

Is kayaking or canoeing included?

Yes. Complimentary canoes are available at all of the floating resorts we work with, with the exception of Sai Chon Raft House. At Sai Chon, canoes can be rented for 200 Baht per canoe.

Can older people or children join?

Yes. People of all ages are welcome to join. However, we do not recommend these tours for babies or toddlers, particularly during the rainy season.

Most activities are suitable for the majority of visitors, but the hike to Kri Sorn Viewpoint may be too challenging for guests with weak knees, limited mobility, or families with very young children.

Is the cave suitable for children?

Yes. The cave is suitable for visitors of all ages and is easily accessible for most people. However, the staircase leading up to the cave entrance may be challenging for guests with limited mobility.

What should I pack?

The following items are not essential but are worth considering:

  • Rainwear, especially during the rainy season (longtail boats do not have rain covers)
  • A waterproof bag for cameras, phones, and other electronics
  • Comfortable walking shoes for hiking
  • Sandals or water shoes for caves and waterfalls
  • Swimwear and a towel (towels are provided by the resorts)
  • Personal toiletries
  • A hat and sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • A flashlight or headlamp
  • Cash for national park entrance fees, drinks and snacks at the floating resort, and transfers to or from the lake, if booked separately
Are there mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are rarely seen on Cheow Lan Lake and are generally not an issue. It is unusual to encounter even a single mosquito during your stay.

However, when hiking to attractions on land, mosquitoes may be present. The number of mosquitoes can vary depending on the season, forest conditions, and time of day. In these areas, insect repellent can be useful, especially during wetter periods.

Is there electricity at the floating resort?

Yes. All floating resorts provide electricity during certain periods, but the availability and duration depend on the resort and, in some cases, the room type.

Most resorts operate electricity for limited hours, while 500 Rai Floating Resort is the only resort we work with that offers 24-hour electricity in their Villa and Suite room categories.

Is Wi-Fi available?

Yes. All floating resorts offer free Wi-Fi. However, accessibility varies between resorts; at some resorts, Wi-Fi is available only in the restaurant or common areas.

Internet access may become unavailable during storms or poor weather conditions.

For mobile data, AIS is currently the only mobile network that can be accessed from parts of Cheow Lan Lake. We recommend guests who need mobile connectivity to use an AIS SIM card.

Can we customize the itinerary?

Yes, to some extent. Some parts of the itinerary are fixed due to logistics, while others can be adjusted according to your preferences.

On the first day, we always visit the limestone karst formations (The 3 Rocks) and Diamond Cave. These attractions are located along the route to the floating resort, and once we pass this area, the guide cannot return later in the tour.

For a 2-day/1-night tour, the afternoon activity can be either a waterfall visit or a viewpoint visit. You can decide which option you prefer.

For a 3-day/2-night tour, there is more flexibility. You can choose the order of the main activities during the afternoon of day 1 and the morning/afternoon sessions of day 2.

Please note that for a 3-day/2-night tour, the itinerary includes a full schedule of activities. If one of the major activities is completely skipped, there may not be another included activity of similar duration to replace it, and the tour price will remain unchanged.

For both 2-day/1-night and 3-day/2-night tours, the final morning session is always an early morning safari. Due to the limited time before departure, there is not enough time for any longer activities on the last morning.

What time does the tour finish?

The tour normally finishes between 9:30 and 10:00 am on the final day. The exact timing depends on the resort location and the return boat schedule.

The boat must be back and ready for the next guests by 10:00 am at the latest, so we cannot extend the tour beyond this time.

Is it worth upgrading to the 3-day tour?

If your budget and schedule allow, a 3-day/2-night tour offers a more relaxed experience and more time to enjoy Cheow Lan Lake.

A 2-day/1-night tour can feel relatively short due to the resort check-in and check-out times, as well as the 40–60 minute boat journey between the pier and many floating resorts. With an extra night, you have more time for activities, relaxing at the resort, and exploring the lake at a slower pace.

That said, many visitors find the 2-day/1-night tour sufficient, especially if they have limited time or prefer a shorter stay.

Can we do a night safari?

No. Night safaris by boat are not allowed on Cheow Lan Lake, as boats are not permitted to operate after sunset.

How does the booking process work?

To start your enquiry, simply click the green "Send enquiry" button. An enquiry page will then be created for you, where you can ask questions, provide additional information, and communicate directly with us. Every time we reply, you will receive an email notification from our system.

During the enquiry process, we aim to provide transparent and honest information about our tours and floating resort options. If a resort has any known general concerns or limitations, we will inform you so you can make an informed decision.

If/when you are ready to book, we will first reserve the room(s) at your chosen resort and then send you an invoice for the required deposit. After the deposit payment has been received, the reservation will be confirmed and we will send you the booking confirmation.

Two days before your tour starts, we will send all final details, including your guide's name and phone number, meeting location, and other important information.

If you have booked transfers with us, we will also provide the driver's details. Our driver will meet you at your hotel's lobby or another agreed meeting point, such as a different type of accommodation, airport, or pier.

Can I cancel a tour at short notice and get a refund?

Unfortunately, short-notice cancellations are generally not refundable. Regardless of which tour company or agency you book with, the cancellation policy is largely determined by the floating resort's policy. Most resorts have strict cancellation conditions, with the non-refundable period often starting at least one month before arrival.

In addition, tour operators have commitments to guides, boat operators, and other service providers, which means costs may still apply even when a guest cancels.

For these reasons, cancellations made at short notice are normally not eligible for a refund, regardless of which company you book with.

The exact cancellation period and any possible refund amount vary depending on the resort. We will always clarify the applicable cancellation policy during the enquiry process before you confirm your booking.

Amazing experience! Our guide Au was very friendly and knowledgeable. She showed us tons of animal and plant life and explained what they are used for, and even provided us with some fresh Rambutan to enjoy! We saw a mother and baby elephant on our evening safari and watched them swim and bathe in the mud for almost an hour, it was incredible! Everything was set up and communicated for us well in advance, from pick up at the airport to arrival to the pier, and dropping us back off at the dock for our ferry ride the next day everything went smoothly. Highly recommend, unforgettable experience!

    Thanks for your feedback. :)

Chances to see elephants during a 2D/1N tour is around 15-20%. You are very lucky! Glad to hear it all went well.

    Kind regards,

The tour was very well organized—everything matched the description on the website and in the additional chat. Whenever we had questions, the team responded quickly and provided all the necessary information.

Cheow Lan Lake looked exactly like the pictures—it was gorgeous and had all the facilities needed to fully enjoy the experience. The food is also worth mentioning: there was plenty of it, and it was absolutely delicious.

A big shout-out to Junn, who was a fantastic guide. At every place we visited, she provided detailed and engaging explanations.

I can only recommend the 2D/1N tour. It really made a difference to have our own private boat, driver and guide Kitcha (we rarely had such a pleasant and passionate guide! Kudos to him!). As for activites, we sailed across the lake, did a short jungle walk wwith lots of explanation, and 2 wildlife safaris with lots of birds and monkeys spotted). Kitcha also tailored the tour so that are 10 and 5 yo kids would enjoy and learn.

Accomodation wise : the common part of the floating plaform is pleasant, all meals delicious and tailored to kids too upon request. The large bungalow was rustic (we had better nights..) but we were warned. For that, we could jump into the lake, swim and do kayak right from our bungalow. The lake was surprisingly hot (30-32 degrees).

Organisation wise, Julia and the team at Thai National Parks were very reliable and transparent - much appreciated.

We had a great private tour with Rob at Khao Sok. He was an informative and funny guide, who lives and breathes nature. He has been amazing at animal spotting and imitating bird sounds. We enjoyed the beauty of the rock formations and the animals and can only recommend this tour.

Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cheow Lan Lake. The Laguna floating resort provided excellent comfort and cleanliness, with all the essentials we needed. Our guide Bee was outstanding—professional, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about sharing the lake’s natural beauty with us. The activities were well-organized and memorable. We would definitely return!

We had a great 2-day, 1-night tour at Cheow Lan Lake. The experience was beautiful, peaceful, and well organized.

The guide was very welcoming and did his best to make sure we felt comfortable. The boat trip was a highlight — stunning limestone cliffs.

The accommodation was simple but atmospheric, and the traditional Thai food was a nice touch.

Overall, highly recommended for a relaxing and authentic nature experience.

The tour in the national park on Cheow Lan Lake was truly impressive. Our guide, in particular, was very attentive and friendly. He really made the experience even better. We especially enjoyed interacting with the locals and hearing their stories and explanations, as well as seeing the beautiful natural surroundings and wildlife, which urgently needs to be preserved here. We were also grateful for the food and how our individual dietary requests were accommodated. Everything was clean on the houseboat as well. The only part we didn’t enjoy as much was the cave, since it was very crowded and we felt like it was a “mass tourism” site.

Excellent tour. Su was an amazing tour guide and we got to go at our own pace. She was great at spotting wildlife and we got to see wild elephants and Gibbon monkeys. Highly recommend the tour for anyone going to Khao Sok.
