Thai National Parks

Day tour - Huai Mae Khamin Falls, Phra Tat Cave & The Bridge over River Kwai

Kanchanaburi Province in west Thailand is home to several natural and historical sites popular among both local and foreign tourists. Huai Mae Khamin Falls are located over 40 km north of Erawan National Park, quite similar falls with emerald green ponds, but much better choice. Due to it's remote location less people visits it.

This one day tour includes a visit to Huai Mae Khamin in Sri Nakharin National Park, Phra Tat Cave a bit north from the falls and The Bridge over River Kwai in central Kanchanaburi.

Our guide will pick you up from your hotel with an a/c car 8 a.m. in the early morning to avoid the crowds at the waterfalls. Around 10 am we will reach Huai Mae Khamin Falls where we will spend 2.5 hours to walk up to all tiers along mostly boardwalk trail. It is possible to swim in one of many emerald green ponds. Good to bring with you hiking shoes, swimwear and towel.

After having lunch at local restaurants near the visitor center we will drive you to Phra Tat Cave located south of the falls. The cave is spacious with many beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, to be explored for an hour.

Or next stop will be Sri Nakharin Dam where we will spend nearly an hour.

Around 6 p.m. we will arrive to Kanchanaburi City to walk over The Bridge over River Kwai. The bridge is named after the film from 1957 based on the novel written by the French writer Pierre Boulle. Around 6:30 p.m. the tour will end.

Where & When?

This full day tour can be booked all year-round. Our guide will meet you 8 a.m. at your hotel where the tour will start from, you will be taken back to your hotel around 6 p.m. on the evening. During the dry/hot seasons the water flow is less in Huai Mae Khamin Falls, but it will be beautiful as the water gets crystal clear and more ideal for swimming.

About: Kui Buri elephant safari, half day

By: , Poland | posted Sat 17 Mar, 2018

Visiting Kui Buri National Park with our 2 kids (1 year and 3 years) was an amazing experience and definitely highlight of our holiday in Thailand. Our guide was very knowledgeable and patient with spotting animals. In fact, we believe that he was the reason why we were able to see 10 elephants and several other animals during our trip. Additionally we highly assess their flexibility. They knew that we’re family with little kids so they sugessted we can make our trip shorter as March tends to be hot and animals would probably show up only later in the afternoon. This way we saved our kids an hour waiting in the sun while still saw many animals. Our kids were crazy about this trip!

About: 1.5-days wildlife tour in Khao Yai

By: , Israel | posted Sat 17 Mar, 2018

We had 1.5 day trip and it was amazing. In the first day we saw millions of bats, really crazy. The second full day was inside the park with very nice and super professional guide that took us into the wild jungle of the National Park and knew exactly where to find all the wild life. I’ve had perfect English and we were only 4 people in the tour so it was just perfect. Thank you Jay (we called him “National Jay-ographic” 😝) and thanks for Thai National Park tours. It was really nice organized!

The trip was awesome! First, we had the best guide Ghaan. Her english was perfect, she was always on time, full of energy, well informed, helpful. She made sure that we had the best possible experience! Transport service and the driver were very good, as well as the food that we had. I was also positively impressed by the park itself. I have beet to a number of national parks in the US, India and China and Khao Yai is one of the best. I will certainly recommend the part and your firm to others. If you want more information about our experience, do not hesitate to ask :) Best regards! Audrius

Really excellent two days with Tata. He was a brilliant guide and found thinks we would never have found on our own. One of the best guides I have had and very knowledgeable and friendly. Saw lots of wildlife in two days including both types of gibbon, elephants, 4 pit vipers, hornbills (pied and great). Serpent eagle. Indo Chinese water dragon, water monitor, samba deer and lots more.

Such a great few days. Will do it again next time.

All in all it was very nice! It is a very special experience, especially when the tours are private! The booking was fairly easy and the responsibility of the staff were excellent.

But for a nationalpark that supposed to be left naturally and untouched it was pretty crowded. But this is an issue for the Nationalpark itself, less your’s.

Tour operator's response

Thank you for your feedback.

Glad to hear the trip was nice.

Indeed the park gets a lot of visitors, and that is a complicated problem. After all, you also wished to see it, just like many other people ;-) . So we are all part of this 'problem'.

Managing the amount of visitors is complicated. All visitors have their own ideas of how such a visit and area should look like, and what facilities should be provided or not for the visitors. And the park management has to try to make decisions.

At the same time, wildlife populations in Khao Yai seem to do fairly well. Not all, tigers have pretty much been extirpated, though that is partly maybe still from the time before the tourism grew. However species like elephants, deer and gibbons all seem to do fairly well in Khao Yai, often better than in other parks. It does look like a crowded park, but when looking on the map it becomes clear that it is still a relatively limited area with human disturbance. Surprising, the wildlife populations near the visitor areas seem to do maybe even better than those away from the visitor areas. The visitors also form some sort of protection. It won't be easy to go out hunting when there are many people around that could hear or see this. Often poaching is a bigger problem in parks that see far less visitors.

But obviously there are two sides of the story. As mentioned not everybody has the same idea about how to visit a park. Some just literally race to the waterfalls and back. Traffic victims especially deer and macaques but also elephants, cats, snakes and other wildlife are common. They get hit by cars that are not careful enough/ drive way too fast.

The park authorities are not equipped to fight this problem.

But all in all it is a complicated problem. We all would like to be alone in a remote place, but we can not block other people from access. Also part of the reason Khao Yai is the easiest park to see wildlife, is exactly because of the visitor number. The animals get more habituated to people and are less likely to flee.

From our extensive experience in the various larger parks in the country, none provides as consistent results when it comes to wildlife watching as Khao Yai. Surely it is not a zoo, but it is definitely one of the best options in the country.

Thank you for booking with us and enjoy your further travels. And who knows we will see you another time in one of the other parks ;-)
