2-days wildlife tour in Khao Yai (Group tour)

This 2-days group tour contains activities both focussed on wildlife watching and scenery. You will join other tourists to explore the beauty of Khao Yai National Park. Unlike other group tour offers in Khao Yai, our groups are limited to up to 6 people, because we believe that too large groups are not optimal for exploring the jungle.

What?

Both days of the 2-days group tour in Khao Yai include hiking, safari drives and visits to waterfalls and other scenic locations. A mix of wildlife watching and enjoying the scenery.

Itinerary

Here follows an example of a typical itinerary. The guide might decide for minor changes depending on better chances for wildlife or e.g. sites not being accessible.

Both days starts with a drive looking for wildlife like gibbons, hornbills, macaques and other animals along the roads. Afterwards we head to a trail to set out on a jungle hike to learn more about the forest inhabitants and the plantlife. Of course different trails will be walked each day.

After having a lunch break we will continue to one of the waterfalls, both days we will visit different falls. And we finish the days with safari drives to check the various saltlicks and foraging areas where if you are lucky elephants or other animals may show up.

Where & When?

This trip departs from Pak Chong and can be booked all year-round. Pak Chong can be reached by public transport from Bangkok, but due to the fixed starting time, one is required to stay overnight in the area prior the tour. But returning by public transport right after the trip is possible. Our guide will drop you at the bus stop in that case.

We will inform you about possible pick up locations (not all hotels are within pick-up range). If you are interested in a private transfer by taxi or minivan from e.g. Bangkok, just let us know!

Suggestion: Hello Hostel is a new budget hostel within walking distance from both the railway station and the bus/ minivan stops. We offer free pick up service from this location. Click here to book Hello Hostel.

How much?

You'll be accompanied by a guide and form a group with other tourists. A minimum number of 4 participants is required before the tour can take off. In case the minimum is not reached we keep the right to cancel the tour. In such an unfortunate case, of course you will get the option to either get the deposit refunded, or we can decide on a bit higher rate based on the group size that allows continuation of the tour.

Unlike most other group tours on offer by other operators in the Khao Yai area, we have decided on a maximum group size of 6 people. We believe a small group is more optimal for wildlife watching and the overall jungle experience.

Important note

Please confirm with us before booking a hotel in Khao Yai area as we don't offer pickup if your hotel is too far away. Or because some hotel owners don't like their guests to be picked up by tour operators.

Expand to see the list of some popular hotels we pick up from

Group size Rate per person

Tour rates include:

  • Entrance fees (400 THB per person per day)

We spent a day with a designated guide. We wanted a private tour which cost about 125 pounds for 2. The booking process was extremely efficient with plenty of information so we knew what to expect. Our guide collected us from the hotel on time (8 am) and returned us at about 4.30. The vehicle was an open backed SUV so not that comfortable but quite ok and high up so good for animal spotting. Our guide was very pleasant and spoke good English. We saw macaque monkeys, gibbons, hornbills, various large lizards and various other birds and a viper. We doubt if we would have been able to spot most of these without a guide so it was definitely worth having one. The guide was enthusiastic about spotting the animals so we didn't feel like daft tourists! He also pointed out notable trees, fungi etc. We went on a short trek right into the rainforest which would not have been possible alone and the guide was very happy to help us with any tricky slopes/climbing over fallen trees etc. We were provided with lunch which was fine. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and would recommend using a guide. It's much cheaper if you go in a small group. The next day we went back to the park with just our driver and went on some easy treks recommended by the guide. As we are both around 60 we felt 2 days in the park was about right as some trails are quite demanding. There is a good visitor centre In the park with a food court maps etc and there are plenty of western style loos there and at some trail heads. The scenery in the park is very beautiful.

Tour operator's response – Thank you for your extensive review. Glad to hear you had a good day. As you correctly point out about the open-backed pick up trucks that we usually use for the safaris, the quality of wildlife watching and enjoyment of the scenery increases with this type of vehicle. Which more than makes up for the slightly lower level of comfort. It's a jungle safari, not a city trip ;-) That's the reason why we not make use of a/c minivans for the tours itself. Believe me, you do not want to be trapped in a minivan when the luck is on your side that some elephants show up on the road, but park regulations would not allow you to get out of the vehicle. It would mean you hardly get to see anything, nor be able to photograph the animals. That's when you really wish to be in one of the open-backed pick up trucks with 360 degrees of clear view ;-)

Very positive Experience. The guide was from the area, so he knew very well the places, the animals, the insects, etc. Him and the driver were also very kind. We have been lucky in meeting almost all the animals of the Park: Macaque (many), Gibbons (they are less), Birds (Hornbill, longtail, etc), Reptiles (Lizard of Mountain and the Chinese dragon Lizard), Barking Deer, Scorpions, Snakes (Pit Viper, Whipsnake), and last but not least a male of Elephant during our way back. Patience (and luck) are critical elements for the success of the trip. We are happy for the choice.

Tour operator's response – Thanks Gabriele! Sounds like you got to see a good selection of wildlife. Thanks for booking our tour.

Very nice experience. I did the two day jungle tour. Thanks to the guides (Beer) I saw a lot of annimals that I did not spot myself. What I liked the most was the hiking away from the main trails. Real jungle experience without seeing to many people. Certainly can recommend this

Tour operator's response – Thanks for your review, Benno! Glad to hear the guide showed you the animals you would likely not have found if visiting by yourself. That's what guides are for ;-) You are always welcome to return.

The guided tour was great. Our tour guide was fantastic. From watching the other guides we definitely think we got the best one. He was very informative, knowledgeable and friendly. He went out of his way several times to make the tour wonferful for us. He was our favorite part of the trip. The park is huge and we were able to see plenty of different animals except elephants but that's ok because we experienced so much during the hike. It was very convenient to have a small group and to be separated from other larger groups because it felt more personal. The communication with the company was also very good and the tour guides made us feel safe. Overall amazing day. Would definitely recommend the company to others, especially the tour guide Tata, he's hilarious!

Tour operator's response – Thanks Joana for sharing your experience!

Our guide Tata was really passionate in showing us the wildlifes in the park. Sharp in spotting animals, insects and knowledgable on the species~ we had a really great time exploring the wild and felt well taken care! He was very encouraging in getting us close to nature, animals and insects. I would not have the courage to have a scorpion on my arm if not for his encouragement! Could not ask for a better guide than him! Big shout to Tata, thank you! 😊

Tour operator's response – Thanks for your kind words, Jasmine! Sounds like you had an unforgettable trip. You are always welcome to return ;-)

We have had a fantastic experience in Khao Yai thanks to our guide! He has a sharp eye to detect animals around us, he knows a lot about the park and he is very friendly. He always picked up our child to show him where to look for animals. I would definitely recommend this tour, even as a 1-day excursion from Bangkok.

Tour operator's response – Dear Katia, Thank you for the kind feedback. Great our guide even tried to do his best to make it enjoyable for the child. Enjoy your travels!

Nice guide véry knowledgeable. We opted to skip the 2nd day forest trip as we were too tired the day before. Lucky for that we manage to see the wild elephant on the way to see the crocodile. The night safari trip is a bit disappointing. Overall the trip is ok but can be improve as the pictures seems to give us a higher expectation.

Tour operator's response – Dear Boon Huat Koh, Thank you for your review. Your comments give us a good opportunity to explain future guests how wildlife watching in the dense jungles works and what can be expected, or better, what you should not expect ;-) We talked with our guide and sounds like you got to see all the animals shown on the tour package page (not that we have ever guaranteed these, because we simply can not!), but not sure what gave you the higher expectations on which you say we need to improve. On a wildlife tour you never know what you will see. It is not a zoo where one can guarantee what will be seen. That's why it is exciting and fun. But we also know that especially for people with not much experience in the jungles, it is hard to know what to expect. Even though we consider the Thai jungles to be some of the most exciting places in the world for wildlife watching, it is at the same time one of the hardest environments for wildlife watching. The only thing we can really guarantee are trees ;-) And it are often those trees that hide the wildlife from sight. An elephant can be less than 10m away but totally hidden from view in these dense jungles. The images on the website are taken in the park, and are therefore not misleading, but are an example of what can be seen in the park. On every tour our guests get to see various types of wild animals ranging from mammals to birds and reptiles. You will never know what will be seen today, but there has never been a day that nothing has been sighted. As mentioned in the correspondence, the iconic species of the park - the Asian Elephant - is certainly no guarantee. Kui Buri national park offers a much better chance for wild elephants. However that does not mean they are uncommon in Khao Yai. It's just that they are not sighted every day. And even if they are seen by others, that does not mean you have the same luck. The park is huge, we can not be everywhere at the same time. So in the end you have been very fortunate with your elephant sighting. We have done 4-day tours in the park without seeing a single elephant. And I can assure that this certainly has nothing to do with a lack of spotting skills or experience of the guide ;-) As you noticed, our guides are very knowledgable and are almost daily in the park. We have carefully selected our guides, one of the first important skills besides their personal passion for wildlife is the skilled eye to spot animals. They know the place like no other and will go out of their way to help you see as much diversity as possible. But they can only do so much. If the animals do not want to be seen, there is nothing more we can do. That's as simple as it is. It's still for a large part the luck of the day (and night). The same counts for the night safari. We've seen amazing creatures on these night safaris, but not every night is the same. Sadly, this particular activity is controlled by the park staff, we have very little influence on the quality. The route is fixed and the park staff drive the car and usually operate the spotlight. We can not choose which driver we get. There have been plenty of moments where we would have loved to be behind the wheel and spotlight ourself to increase the quality. But the rules do not allow us to do so. You may ask, why would we still offer it if we have no control and are not always happy with how it is operated? The answer is simple. Even on night drives with a driver going a tad too fast for our liking, or with a less-skilled spotlighting assistant we have still managed to see interesting animals that would not be seen in daytime. It's a rare glimpse in the nocturnal wildlife of the park. Surely not every night safari is fruitful, but if we would have to cut out every activity from our itineraries that occasionally has no success in spotting any wildlife, it would mean we could quit offering any of the tour activities, haha. Sometimes we see nothing on a hike, or nothing on a daytime safari drive, or nothing near the falls, or nothing on a night drive. The next day the some of the same activities might be very successful. Time is the key to success. That's why we recommend at least 2 days in the park. Like in your case, you would not have seen the elephant or crocodile if you'd only done a 1-day trip. Hopefully next time you will have a better idea of what to expect from a jungle tour ;-)

Five Star all the way! We absolutely loved our stay at Baan Rai Kongmum Farm Resort - such as magical place! Excellent breakfast, comfortable/clean rooms, stunning views from the porch. We had to buy some beer just to sit out on the porch and 'listen' to the mountains. Our guide to Kui Buri, Soom, was fantastic. As a fellow Master Naturalist, I would love to come over and work with her on the treks, providing the English names to the flora we saw on our trek. The trip from the guest house to the Park was exhilarating in the open air truck. The local pad thai dinner down the road from the guest house was simply the best we experienced in Thailand - or maybe it was the full moon and mountain atmosphere? We saw so many elephants, guar, deer and even a bentang. I would recommend this tour to anyone without hesitation. I also appreciated the candor of the Tontan Tour regarding the free cabins in the park. We did visit them and are glad, in fact extremely happy, we opted for the Baan Rai Kongmun resort on the edge of the Park. We have lots of pictures and would be happy to post on Face book if you like. Thank you! You delivered an outstanding adventure!!!

Tour operator's response – Dear Karen, Thank you for your great review. Sounds like you indeed had a great trip. Even a Banteng sighting, that's rare. Only a few individuals are known to occur in the park and these are not frequently encountered. Thank you for taking the time to sent this extensive review!

My wife and I had the most amazing visits to, Doi Inthanon and Khao Yai. Whilst being very different in nature we thoroughly enjoyed each day and would wholeheartedly recommend them. The guides and drivers on all occasions were knowledgeable and very professional answering all our needs and questions. The Doi Inthanon day provided a glimpse of the society of the hills and the historical development of this beautiful area of Northern Thailand. The Khao Yai day was aimed at the wonderful natural history and a more successful day could not have been envisaged. We saw Great hornbill, wild elephant, Gibbon, Macaque, Porcupine on the night safari and many more wonderful creatures. Unfortunately I am unable to remember the names of the guides and drivers but they all deserve a big well done for their efforts.

What little we could do of our trip we enjoyed. We weren't able to hike at all or visit one of the villages because I got very sick that morning and we had to return home. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to reschedule for the next day because local tribal guides had already been deployed and needed to be paid. We understand and accept this. The two hours we were able to spend with our guide Dui were pleasant and we really liked him and the driver. We were disappointed we weren't able to do the hiking and complete our entire day. We hope to return some day. Thank you.

Our day and night safari was amazing! We were so lucky to see so many animals but even if we hadn't, the scenery alone is spectacular. Our guide was really attentive, knowledgable and great fun and so please pass on a huge thank you and our greatest praise to him. The whole day has been the highlight of our trip and we were so pleased that we had the guide that we did - we feel that we got an extra special experience because he spotted the wildlife so well, including a bird of prey sat in a tree miles away (we couldn't see it at all until we looked through the scope) and a scorpion crossing the road! He also helped us take some great photos. Thank you!

Tour operator's response – Thank you for your great review! Next time you are welcome to try one of our multi-day packages ;-)

It was great! We had such a good guide who really made it a great day. Next time hopefully we see elephants!

Tour operator's response – Elephants are not uncommon in Khao Yai either, quite a few of our guests get lucky, but they are not seen on a daily basis. Even several days could go by without any elephant sightings. So we also have enough guests that never get to see one.

Tour operator's response – Thanks for your feedback! You are more than welcome to return. ;-) And a tip! If you are interested in wild elephants, perhaps you could try Kui Buri national park on your next trip. As we mentioned in the correspondence prior booking, Kui Buri offers a much higher chance for elephants than Khao Yai. Nothing is guaranteed in nature when it comes to wildlife, but so far I remember only one group that booked with us that was unlucky in Kui Buri. On all other afternoon safaris and overnight trips elephants were sighted.

We booked our trip for Kao Yai for friday 24th. Communication during booking was very clear. We asked to do the trip with other people; to reduce the costs, which wasn't a problem. Our guide (Tata or Tantan, don't know how to write it), came to pick us up at our hotel; which was very easy. On our way into the park; we already saw a few makaaks and the great hornbill. We picked up a German couple; they we're really cool. In the morning we went for a 2,5h hike. Tata was really passionate about nature. He was funny; answered questions and said some really interesting cool stuff. He knew the hiding hole of a scorpion; which he triggered and then put on our hands; he had an eye for detail and showed us the birds and the reptiles, etc. We even saw the crocodile in the water! Lunch was really good; where we saw the waterfall. In the afternoon we went on a chase with the car because they were signs that one of the male elephants was spotted; so we actually saw him! Checking a wild elephant; crossed off of our bucket list! Then we went to visit the scenery; which was a beauuuutiful view of the park; were we saw some sort of wild Thai goats that all of the sudden with a lot or noise showed up. The trip was really unforgettable and was one of the highlights of Thailand; I'd recommend it to everybody!!

Tour operator's response – Dear Stefanie & Bieke, Thank you for your kind feedback. We are happy to hear you seem to have had a great experience. Even seen an elephant and the rare Indochinese Serow (the mountain goat). Very lucky for just a one day visit. We will thank our guide Tata in name of you! Thanks!
