Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary

Group Tour | Hiking in Phuket's jungles

Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary is the last remaining evergreen rainforest of Phuket Island, located on the northeast of the island.

What?

Guided by an English speaking local guide, we will hike along either a 3.5 km (2 hours hike) or a 8 km (4 hour hike) long trail in Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary. The first part of the hike will be along the rocky stream bed of a multi-tiered Ton Sai Waterfall. The second part will be slightly downhill through various mixed habitats, partly bamboo mixed forest pockets.

The 4-hour hiking also includes visiting the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project on the east side of the sanctuary.

Apart from hiking, there will be an opportunity to swim in one of the natural ponds along the stream. During the drier months from February to May, there may be very little or no water at all, so swimming may not be possible.

During the hike, our guide will keep an eye for wildlife around. The type of species that may be seen in such a relatively small forest will be the smaller ones like snakes, lizards, frogs, crabs, freshwater shrimps, orb spiders and other insects. There will be gibbons around but sighting is occasionally, better chance to hear their distant calls.

A recently described agamid species called "Phuket tree dragon" which is an endemic species only found along the Phuket Mountain Range of the Southern Tenasserim Hills is relatively common along the trail, hopefully the guide will spot one for you. Another endemic and rare species only found in the island is Phuket Pit Viper (Trimeresurus phukethensis), during the driver seasons easier to find in the bushes along the stream.
