Thai National Parks

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park trekking

This tour is available all year round.

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is the nearest national park in Chiang Mai right at the west edge of the city. The park is home to largest Hmong community in Northern Thailand, more known for the Doi Suthep Temple at the top of the mountain, clearly seen from the city. The park has many trails crossing the beautiful forests of the park on all directions.

What?

A day trip to the park includes visiting Doi Suthep Temple and hiking along one of best trails in Chiang Mai area, with good views over surrounding areas and through some Hmong villages. There will be less driving and more hiking for sure.

Itinerary

Our guide and driver will pick you up with an a/c minivan from your hotel 8 a.m. and drive you to Doi Suthep Temple in early morning to avoid the daily crowds. The temple is 300 steps up, it has a majestic view over Chiang Mai and surrounding area.

Next, we continue to the popular Doi Pui Village near the top of Doi Pui (Doi means mountain in Northern Thai dialect), the village had a turbulent history of opium cultivation. After walking around in the village we will meet a local Hmong guide who will accompany us on a 6 hour long hike through forest and impressive viewpoints. Along the way we will stop by at few Hmong villages which attract very few tourists, our local guide will share his knowledge about the Hmong community and the nature in the national park. We will gradually walk uphill to a viewpoint with an impressive view on both sides of the mountain. After stopping briefly to look at a footprint of Buddha, we will enjoy a picnic lunch at a nearby scenic spot.

After the lunch we will continue the hike through the forest to Ban Mae Sa Mai which is the largest Hmong village in Northern Thailand. This village too gets very few visitors, here we will visit the small Hmong museum and get a brief info about a project managed by the forest restoration unit of Chiang Mai University.

At the end of the tour you will be returned to your hotel in Chiang Mai.

Note: Due to various reasons out of our control we may have to adjust this itinerary. We always make sure the quality of this tour and your safety is safeguarded on any eventual alteration of the itinerary.

About: 1-day wildlife tour in Khao Yai

Our tour guide was amazing. I have no idea how he was able to spot some of the animals hiding in the thick canopy, without him we would have seen very little wildlife. We also knew there was a chance we might not see elephants but our guide was determined to try and find them for us (coordinating with other tour guides and park officials to see if there were any sightings) and at the very end of our trip we finally got to see them! Overall we had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed our day.

Tour operator's response

Thanks Travis!

Glad to hear you were lucky on your day trip!

Our family enjoyed the trip very much. The ranger, Kan is very caring and sensitive. She took great care of my kids and mum. She is also very sensitive to the surroundings and always ready to search for wild animals without compromising our safety!

Tour operator's response

Thanks Evelyn for your nice review!

We will thank our guide Kan for her good work.

I tiny correction, our guides are not park rangers ;-)

We are Expats in Bangkok. It was the best what could happen to us going to Khao Yai National Park. We enjoyed our trip and Safari very much. And Tata and his Cousin Jay are outstanding guides. We have seen so much wildlife and everything was well explained. Tatas English language skills are outstanding (he also speaks some German). He was extremly Patience with us and our two Girls (9 and 13 years old). We highly recommend them and a trip to Khao Yai National Park.

Tour operator's response

Thanks Sylvia for the kind words!

The trip went smoothly, the guide Lek was early, and managed to point out several animals for us which we would have missed. The ride was smooth-sailing as well, excellent driving skills. We finished the treks earlier than expected and the guide brought us to the top of the mountain and an elephant home.

About: 1.5-days wildlife tour in Khao Yai

Our guide Ton arranged our 1.5 day tour in Khao Yai National Park. She arranged a transfer from our hotel in Bangkok, and the vehicle and the driver were excellent on both trips to and from Bangkok, would highly recommend. We really appreciated being looked after, the water to drink on board and the quality of the vehicles and driver.

Ton collected us the first evening and took us swimming at a local water hole with clean clear water. We had a great evening seeing bats, a budha cave and a couple of snakes.

The next day we spent the day on the back of a truck for better viewing in the park. It was casual and fun. What Ton has, that every wildlife guide needs is the ability to see wildlife - this is a skill and we got to benefit from it. We saw an elephant from a distance, we saw a crocodile, monkeys, and had a great day rushing around in the grass looking for the elephant. We had a local lunch, which I enjoyed - as this seemed a little more real than some of the other tourist spots for lunch.

I would like to say thank you to Ton and her drivers - we thoroughly enjoyed the days with her and would recommend her without hesitation.

Tata was one of the best guide we could ever asked for! We were really impressed with his service provided, to his extensive knowledge of the park and wildlife, as well as his photography skills where he captured many beautiful and national geographic like shots for us! Throughout the day, Tata really did his best in listening for and pointing out wildlife, while also introducing and explaining the fauna in the park. However, we understand that the park may be overcrowded on a Saturday, hence we did not see as much wildlife as expected. Nonetheless, We look forward in joining Thai National Park tours again! :)

Tour operator's response

Dear Clara,

Thank you for you praise for our guide. Good to hear you enjoyed his guidance.

You are always welcome to return ;-)

The visit to Kao Yai was very good, filled with emotions. I came to see wild elefants and that I got, 15 of them, 5 cubs. Although the interaction from other humans was at times devastating it was well worth the trip.

Our Guide "Beer" was very knowledgeable and had a keen eye, together with the driver "Nat" they spotted several animals for us. Top grade on this.

P.S. Beer was supposed to send me some photos of the elefant encounter. If possible, I would greatly appreciate it. (r****en.se) Kap kun kap!

Tour operator's response

Glad to hear our guide did his best to show you the wildlife. Even lucky to see elephants!

I will ask Beer to sent some pics. I guess it is our fault he has not sent any yet, as he has been in the jungle pretty much every day after your trip ;-)
