Thai National Parks

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park trekking

This tour is available all year round.

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is the nearest national park in Chiang Mai right at the west edge of the city. The park is home to largest Hmong community in Northern Thailand, more known for the Doi Suthep Temple at the top of the mountain, clearly seen from the city. The park has many trails crossing the beautiful forests of the park on all directions.

What?

A day trip to the park includes visiting Doi Suthep Temple and hiking along one of best trails in Chiang Mai area, with good views over surrounding areas and through some Hmong villages. There will be less driving and more hiking for sure.

Itinerary

Our guide and driver will pick you up with an a/c minivan from your hotel 8 a.m. and drive you to Doi Suthep Temple in early morning to avoid the daily crowds. The temple is 300 steps up, it has a majestic view over Chiang Mai and surrounding area.

Next, we continue to the popular Doi Pui Village near the top of Doi Pui (Doi means mountain in Northern Thai dialect), the village had a turbulent history of opium cultivation. After walking around in the village we will meet a local Hmong guide who will accompany us on a 6 hour long hike through forest and impressive viewpoints. Along the way we will stop by at few Hmong villages which attract very few tourists, our local guide will share his knowledge about the Hmong community and the nature in the national park. We will gradually walk uphill to a viewpoint with an impressive view on both sides of the mountain. After stopping briefly to look at a footprint of Buddha, we will enjoy a picnic lunch at a nearby scenic spot.

After the lunch we will continue the hike through the forest to Ban Mae Sa Mai which is the largest Hmong village in Northern Thailand. This village too gets very few visitors, here we will visit the small Hmong museum and get a brief info about a project managed by the forest restoration unit of Chiang Mai University.

At the end of the tour you will be returned to your hotel in Chiang Mai.

Note: Due to various reasons out of our control we may have to adjust this itinerary. We always make sure the quality of this tour and your safety is safeguarded on any eventual alteration of the itinerary.

We loved the trip. Even with bad weather we had a lot of fun being able to trek through the jungle and see cool sights.

Chai was a great guide and super knowledgeable and Joe looked after our friend when she was unable to come trekking.

About: Kui Buri overnight elephant tour

Our trip to Kui Buri National Park was absolutely fantastic. We stayed at bungalows, which are situated very close to the National Park. The bungalows are very nice, and in the morning from our balcony we saw no less than eight (!) hornbills! Bill served us a very large and very good breakfast with rice and eggs and pineapple and toast and sweets and freshly ground coffee in front of the bungalow on the balcony, incredible. Bill is a pineapple farmer, and he was also our guide, the best guide ever! Thank you very much for everything! During the tour we saw around 40 (!) elephants and a large, large herd of gaurs! A real adventure! The next day, we met very early in the morning. We saw many coloured birds, many large hornbills, one elephant (to say goodbye ...), and even a viper! Thank you so much! We recommend this trip to Kui Buri National Park! Stay with Bill, if possible!

Tour operator's response

We had a great day with our tourguide "apple". He was always looking for us, in close contact with everybody of us and always caring about our well-being.

Moreover, we had much fun with him.

The tour itself was a bit damaged by the ongoing rain, but nevertheless, we had a good day and really appreciated "appleĀ“s" presence.

We can really recommend a guided tour in this national park!

Tata was excellent.

Very passionate and knowledgable (both plants and animals) and speaks good English. The private tour (whilst more expensive) was defiantly worth it.

We were very fourtunate and saw some great wildlife - Jungle Cat, Elephant, Great Hornbill, Scorpion, Monitor Lizard, Gibbon...lots of highlights!

Tour operator's response

Thanks William for your comments. Sounds like you had quite a bit of luck indeed!

And that for only one day.

It got me excited to read 'Jungle Cat' but even though it is indeed a cat living in the jungle, I just confirmed with Tata that the actual species you got to see was a Leopard Cat. Which is certainly exciting as well, seeing any cat species in Thailand requires a lot of luck. Though due to the rarity of the Jungle Cat in Thailand, that would have even been more amazing.

Actually Leopard Cats are inhabiting more proper 'jungle' areas like the evergreen forests in Khao Yai, than the actual Jungle Cat which to my knowledge prefers dry deciduous forest and open grass plains. The Jungle Cat had not been seen in Thailand, even not on camera traps for quite some years until recently when it was captured on camera trap in the North of Thailand. It seems that species has been extirpated in much of its range in Thailand. Such a shame. Several of the 9 cat species in Thailand are not doing too well. Habitat destruction and poaching have taken their toll :( .

The Leopard Cat is still found in many parks in Thailand, though being primarily nocturnal (your sighting is even more special as it was in daylight, in the morning) it is certainly not commonly encountered. Night activities are very restricted, in most areas not possible at all, so that strongly reduces the chance of a sighting.

So congratulations with this sighting!

Thank you for booking with us!

Very much enjoyed the day in the park

Lovely to see animals in their natural habitat

We saw different birds, macac monkeys and gibbons playing above our heads

No elephants anywhere. Not even heard in the distance.

Our guide was very good very informative and made our day very enjoyable

A little disappointed in the evening tour as only saw deer in the park

Very please we just didn't bring raincoats but coats with hoods as it was cold and a little rainy this time of the year!!!

Overall very enjoyable

Kind regards

Gillian and Howard Lewis

Tour operator's response

Thanks Gillian and Howard for your review.

A shame the weather was not at your side.

For that reason we always recommend rain poncho and sweater. It often surprises people that it can get chilly in Thailand. The forest mountains are cooler, and even more so when sitting in the back of a driving vehicle in evening hours.

IN the wet season it varies a lot though. But better to be prepared than cold and/ or wet ;-)

A shame the elephants did not show up. That's why in the emails we always recommend Kui Buri if elephants are the main target. Even though not uncommon in Khao Yai, it still requires quite a bit of luck, even more so if only visiting for one day.

Thank you for joining us!

Our guide in the first day was khan and in the second and third day was tata.

We had a perfect time in the national park.

A big part of it thanks to our guides. They were just fantastic. Showed a lot of knowledge in many different subjects. Were very flexable and kind. Very happy with an amazing attitude .

Also the park is pretty impressive.
