Thai National Parks

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park trekking

This tour is available all year round.

Doi Suthep-Pui National Park is the nearest national park in Chiang Mai right at the west edge of the city. The park is home to largest Hmong community in Northern Thailand, more known for the Doi Suthep Temple at the top of the mountain, clearly seen from the city. The park has many trails crossing the beautiful forests of the park on all directions.

What?

A day trip to the park includes visiting Doi Suthep Temple and hiking along one of best trails in Chiang Mai area, with good views over surrounding areas and through some Hmong villages.

Itinerary

Our guide and driver will pick you up with an a/c minivan from your hotel 8 a.m. and drive you to Doi Suthep Temple in early morning to avoid the daily crowds. The temple is 300 steps up, it has a majestic view over Chiang Mai and surrounding area.

Next, we continue to the popular Doi Pui Village near the top of Doi Pui (Doi means mountain in Northern Thai dialect), the village had a turbulent history of opium cultivation. After walking around in the village we will meet a local Hmong guide who will accompany us on a 6 hour long hike through forest and impressive viewpoints. Along the way we will stop by at few Hmong villages which attract very few tourists, our local guide will share his knowledge about the Hmong community and the nature in the national park. We will gradually walk uphill to a viewpoint with an impressive view on both sides of the mountain. After stopping briefly to look at a footprint of Buddha, we will enjoy a picnic lunch at a nearby scenic spot.

After the lunch we will continue the hike through the forest to Ban Mae Sa Mai which is the largest Hmong village in Northern Thailand. This village too gets very few visitors, here we will visit the small Hmong museum and get a brief info about a project managed by the forest restoration unit of Chiang Mai University.

At the end of the tour you will be returned to your hotel in Chiang Mai.

Note: Due to various reasons out of our control we may have to adjust this itinerary. We always make sure the quality of this tour and your safety is safeguarded on any eventual alteration of the itinerary.

We had an amazing 2-day tour experience! We can't overstate how much it exceeded our expectations! We ended up seeing every single thing that was promised, and so much more including tons of animals and birds. Our guide was excellent and knew the answers to all our questions. We ate great food and the tour was adjusted to accommodate the types of things we wanted to see. We would recommend this tour to everyone!

Local partner – We're happy to read your positive review. That's what we are doing it for, to make the guests have a great time. You are always welcome to return ;-)

Booking this tour was a great decision. It was so easy and so much fun. We were picked up at our hostel in Pak Chong and driven to the park. It was just us and our guide/driver. We got to see every inch of Khao Yai, run after gibbons, spot different birds, and even do a night safari where we saw elephants! We felt very safe and taken care of- great value and the passion of our guide (Tata) only made it better. Thank so much- we will definitely be recommending to any friends heading that way!

Local partner – Thanks Laura for your kind words!

Tata and Boo were my guides for the day. This trip exceeded my expectations. Tata and Boo knew just were to go to show us various wildlife. I marveled at Tata's skill with bird calls, and really appreciated all that I learned. They both clearly cared about the park and the animals. That shone through. It's not just a job. I will definitely recommend this to others and will name these two for reference.

Local partner – Dear Chanda, Thank you for taking the time to sent us your review. And great to hear our guides did their 'job' well ;-) The passion for the nature and wildlife is the first and most important quality we look for in a guide. The guests will feel that, and it is 'contagious' ;-) Thanks for booking with us!

A really peaceful day in nature. Jay is an excellent interpreter of the wildlife in the park and we so enjoyed the trek. Without a guide it would be very difficult to navigate and to find the animals and birds. One thing that could help to make the trip even more memorable were if Jay's long lens photos were available. I wholeheartedly recommend others to book the tour with Jay and believe it can be adjusted to all levels of interest.

Local partner – Thanks Ralph Paul for your kind words. Glad to hear you had a lovely day!

This is one of the best nature tour I have taken, not only because the animals were gracious enough to greet us. Our guide Tata was excellent. Knowledgeable, friendly, open, and Michel more. Tks Tata for making my last days in Thailand so enjoyable. Hoping to welcome you one day in Vancouver.

Local partner – Thanks Pascaline! Sounds like our guide did a great job again (as always ;-) ). If you ever return to Thailand you know where to find us.

We booked our trip for Kao Yai for friday 24th. Communication during booking was very clear. We asked to do the trip with other people; to reduce the costs, which wasn't a problem. Our guide (Tata or Tantan, don't know how to write it), came to pick us up at our hotel; which was very easy. On our way into the park; we already saw a few makaaks and the great hornbill. We picked up a German couple; they we're really cool. In the morning we went for a 2,5h hike. Tata was really passionate about nature. He was funny; answered questions and said some really interesting cool stuff. He knew the hiding hole of a scorpion; which he triggered and then put on our hands; he had an eye for detail and showed us the birds and the reptiles, etc. We even saw the crocodile in the water! Lunch was really good; where we saw the waterfall. In the afternoon we went on a chase with the car because they were signs that one of the male elephants was spotted; so we actually saw him! Checking a wild elephant; crossed off of our bucket list! Then we went to visit the scenery; which was a beauuuutiful view of the park; were we saw some sort of wild Thai goats that all of the sudden with a lot or noise showed up. The trip was really unforgettable and was one of the highlights of Thailand; I'd recommend it to everybody!!

Local partner – Dear Stefanie & Bieke, Thank you for your kind feedback. We are happy to hear you seem to have had a great experience. Even seen an elephant and the rare Indochinese Serow (the mountain goat). Very lucky for just a one day visit. We will thank our guide Tata in name of you! Thanks!
